The 18-minute rule is a ceiling almost no one hits.
The typical TEDx talk runs 12.3 minutes, a full six minutes under the number everyone quotes. Nine in ten come in under 18, and only about 4% push past 20. The famous rule is a maximum, and most speakers stop well short of it.
Does length change how many people watch?
A little. Views nudge upward toward a 13 to 18 minute sweet spot, then fall away again. Very short talks (under 8 minutes) actually do worst of all, and talks over 22 minutes lose ground too. The most-watched talks tend to sit in that mid-range, which is why smaller studies of “top” talks report ~13.5 minutes.
Length is a rounding error.
Look at the numbers again. The best length bucket gets a median of 361 views. The worst gets 192. That is the entire prize for “perfect” timing: the difference between invisible and slightly-less-invisible. Nailing your run time cannot rescue a talk that no one is shown.
Title, topic, run time: all rounding errors next to distribution. The talks that spread are the ones someone puts in front of people.
The right length won’t save an unseen talk.
Aim for 13 to 18 minutes if you want the small edge. Then stop optimising the talk and start thinking about who will ever see it. Across all three of our studies the pattern is the same: format is a footnote, reach is the whole story.
You got the talk right. Now get it seen.

How long is the average TEDx talk?
The median TEDx talk is 12.3 minutes long, based on 34,065 talks. Half are shorter than that. The average and the median are effectively the same, so 12 to 13 minutes is the true typical length, not 18.
Is there an 18-minute limit on TEDx talks?
18 minutes is TED's guideline maximum, not a target. In practice 90% of TEDx talks come in under 18 minutes and only about 4% run past 20. The famous rule is a ceiling almost no one reaches.
Does a shorter TEDx talk get more views?
Not exactly. Very short talks (under 8 minutes) get the fewest views (median 192). The mild sweet spot is 13 to 18 minutes, which peaks around 361 median views. But the effect is small.
What is the ideal length for a TEDx talk?
If you are optimising for views, 13 to 18 minutes shows a slight edge. But the effect is minor. Length barely moves the needle compared to whether the talk gets distributed to a real audience.
Methodology & scope
First-party data, part of our TEDx study series alongside The View Gap and The Engagement Gap.
- Source: the official TEDx YouTube channel, durations via the YouTube Data API, measured 29 Aug 2026.
- Sample: 34,065 TEDx talks between 2 and 60 minutes. Shorts and sub-2-minute clips were excluded so the numbers reflect full talks, not fragments.
- Length vs views compares median views across length bands. The relationship is real but weak (correlation 0.14), which is the point: length is a minor factor.
- Medians are used throughout, because a few viral talks skew every average.
